Pass Beyond This Phase, And You’re Safe!

We’re sure the themes of these Chronicles’ will be evolving and getting more and more exciting as we move on. But for now, the most relevant topic seems to be the one portrayed on the headline.

I’d love to have come up myself with these words:

“You think Resistance isn’t real? Resistance will bury you.”

But the credit goes to Steven Pressfield on «The War of Art» (a piece of art indeed, that everyone should read at least once in their lifetime).

The whole book is filled with highlightable phrases. Either because they’re right on point, or because of the author’s perfect choice of words again and again.

And I might use excerpts from it in today’s Chronicle because they flawlessly portray the experience of many, many projects in their initial phase, which is…

«To experience freaking, sticky resistance.»

We know — from personal experience, as well as that of our awakening-coaching clients — that this stage in which resistance is the main character, is where you have one of the most remarkable opportunities to expand your perspective and gain wisdom.

The mission to explore your resistances, should you choose to accept it, will become a potent trampoline that will accelerate and strengthen your project—and your life.

So that’s why we’re devoting so much time and energy in this exploration WHILE we keep taking as much action as the shackles of resistance allows us to.

And for sure we recommend you to do the same in your own way: to explore as you move — instead of postponing action until you’re done thinking it through.

What are we doing while we explore our resistances, so our digital nomads project keeps moving forward?

  • We have an action plan to keep us focused and in motion. We don’t always cross off all the weekly goals and daily commitments from our whiteboard and stickies wall, but we do our best, and have a solid reference and guideline.
  • We keep ourselves accountable on a daily basis. In the beginning, we had update meetings only on the weekends. But it wasn’t working. Sidetracking is effortless, and recognizing it it’s easy to evade. That was slowing down our capacity to course correct and make effective progress.
So the new strategy is to have raw, naked — figuratively speaking — meetings over dinner, to cover the following:
    1. Pinpointing the actual fear behind the resistance (there’s always a fear behind it), and exploring it. We dig deeper into this towards the end of this post.
    2. Check what kind of support each one of us needs to process the fear and to keep moving.
    3. Establish necessary adjustments and new commitments, if any.
  • Starting this week, we decided to reconnect with— as often as we can and through whichever creative ways we can come up with — the excitement, the soul desire, and the BIG-WHY that drove ourselves into this adventure.

Resistance is impersonal

This excerpt from «The War of Art” helped us immensely to relate to resistance in a less threatening and more empowering way:

“RESISTANCE IS IMPERSONAL

Resistance is not out to get you personally. It doesn’t know who you are and doesn’t care. Resistance is a force of nature. It acts objectively.

Though it feels malevolent, Resistance in fact operates with the indifference of rain and transits the heavens by the same laws as the stars. When we marshal our forces to combat Resistance, we must remember this.”

What’s FEAR got to do with resistance?

Remember Tina Turner’s hit “What’s Love got to do with this?

Here you have it on video, to refresh your memory and keep a light vibe ;-)

Well, what’s fear got to do with resistance?

Everything.

Here’s another excerpt from “The Art of War”, regarding FEAR:

“The more scared we are of a work or calling, the more sure we can be that we have to do it.

Resistance is experienced as fear; the degree of fear equates to the strength of Resistance. Therefore the more fear we feel about a specific enterprise, the more certain we can be that that enterprise is important to us and to the growth of our soul. That’s why we feel so much Resistance. If it meant nothing to us, there’d be no Resistance.”

We can’t tell you what’s fear got to do with your resistance.

We’re still exploring what’s got to do with ours.

But for sure we’re seeing what’s in here for us, as we move.

And we won’t evade, push away nor quit.

We’ll keep taking aligned action.

Why?

Because excitement is higher guidance.

Because excitement is pulling us to do this.

And you don’t want to mess with Higher Guidance ;-)
